2018 REGIONAL SUMMIT

Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018

8:30 am - 4: 30 pm
Lovell Showroom, 426 14th Street, Astoria, OR

Last January, more than 1,300 concerned people from across our region marched to protest the Trumpian threat to democracy and human decency. This year, we’ll gather on January 20, 8:30 - 4:30 pm, for Turn the Tide 2018 Regional Summit, hosted by Indivisible North Coast Oregon (INCO). Through speakers and workshops, we’ll share strategies for framing the dialogue, sustaining activism, and transforming grassroots energy into action. Open to all; drop in or stay for the day.

Jen Hoffman | Answering the Call
As activists, we regularly encounter distressing news and aspects of human nature that oppose our deeply-held values. With a stable, nourishing foundation, we can prevent the weariness and strain that this stress causes. In this interactive presentation, get inspired to cultivate groundedness and resilience in your life. You'll come away with a plan to help you flourish through challenge.

Before the 2016 presidential election, Jennifer Hofmann was a mild-mannered travel blogger, writer, and avowed politophobe. Following the election, she put her taxpayer-funded education to good use to write the weekly Americans of Conscience action checklist, distributed to an engaged list of over 70,000 subscribers. With diplomacy, sincerity, and heart, she inspires fellow Americans--even moderate Republicans--to engage in their democracy. See what she's up to at AmericansofConscience.com

Linai Vaz | Re-Framing the Debate: It’s All About the Brain
The rise of Trumpism has left many progressives scratching their heads. The reality is that the conservatives have been at it for years, working to re-frame their message while hyping wedge issues and cultivating culture wars. In this presentation, Linai Vaz shares practical lessons on how progressives can use the power of cognitive science to re-frame the debate, talk about our values effectively, and ultimately win elections.

An immigrant hailing from Brazil and a proud naturalized American citizen, Linai Vaz, Ph.D., has been studying the brain for many years. This work dates from her studies at Ohio State University and her role coaching the US Synchronized Swimming Olympic Team to double Bronze Medals at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Since the 2016 election, she has been active in the Indivisible-OR-1 leadership team as well as several women’s groups. She also leads a feisty Lakoffian Team that is busy creating accessible materials to help spread the word on framing to other progressives.

Lindsay Hessel | Democracy Happens Every Day
Join Lindsay Hessel, District Captain for Sister District OR3, to look ahead to the 2018 election and beyond. Successful elections are the result of months or years of consistent work, and we’re just getting started. We’ll cover the importance of local and state elections, how to deepen the bench of great candidates, and the essential grassroots work that gets people elected.

Lindsay Hessel has called Oregon home since 2002. When she isn't strategizing ways to turn red seats blue, she works in the tech industry and is a volunteer tax preparer with CASH Oregon. In the summer, she can be found hiking the Northwest with her husband and their Cocker spaniel, Tulip.
