ACTION: POSTCARDS TO OUR SENATORS

From Indivisible Oregon...

**CALL TO ACTION**
Thursday-Friday, December 28-29, 2017

POSTCARDS TO OUR SENATORS
———————————————————————————
#DreamActNow
#FundCHIP
#NoRepeal
#NoTrumpTaxScam
With the exception of the Trump Tax Scam, Trump and the GOP had little luck in enacting any major legislation in 2017. Much of this was due to actions in the Senate where the minority party is able to exercise some power—preventing some of the more extreme portions of the GOP agenda from becoming law. And our Senators did us proud. They fought for so many issues important to us and to other Oregonians and were particularly stalwart in battling to save the Affordable Care Act and to stop the Tax Scam. They held numerous town halls all over the state. Their staff welcomed us to their offices every week and provided follow up on our “asks.”
There will always be ups and downs in the relationship between a constituent and an elected representative. We must work hard to make our needs known, and they must strive to hear us. We may not always see eye to eye, but we hope that both of us act in good faith.
And, to show our good faith, please consider sending our Senators a postcard this holiday season. Thank them for their persistence in resisting the Trump agenda and let them know we will be calling again--very soon.

**ACTION: SEND OUR SENATORS POST CARDS OF THANKS**
Senators Wyden and Merkley stood up for Oregonians by fighting against the repeal of the ACA and trying to prevent passage of the Trump Tax Scam. Please consider sending a postcard of thanks, with reflections on the past year and/or hopes for the year ahead.

    MY HOPES
    Dear Indivisibles,
Since that fateful day in June, 2016, when Trump descended the escalator to cheering crowds of paid actors ... the world has been knocked on its keister. Will we ever stand up again? My hopes for the future are in smart, kind children and grassroots groups like Indivisible, but from this spot within the fray ... it's hard to tell. I'm real glad we're in this together ... that helps.

    •
All patriotic Americans in Congress and the administration should ensure that the Mueller investigation continues unhindered
    •  Congress should fund CHIP - health insurance for 9 million children

    •  Democrats should force a vote to restore net neutrality.
    •  Congress should fund $180 billion for disaster relief/rebuilding in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico (where Americans lack power/clean water/healthcare), the Northwest after wildfires
    •  Democrats should stop the GOP's assault on Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid

CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS AND GET READY FOR 2018

    #MidTerms2018
    #GOTV
    #WokeVote

As 2017 comes to a close, Indivisible Oregon wants you to know what an honor it is to work together with you to save our country.  It has been an extremely exciting and historic year.  To quote Indivisible Guide http://bit.ly/2pkefpn:

“Even though we lost fights . . . earlier [last] week, you’ve accomplished so much in just a year. You’ve defeated Republican attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act twice. You’ve won vital elections in half a dozen states. And you’ve built a nationwide, progressive movement that demands to be reckoned with from Republicans and Democrats alike.

And, in 2018, we’ll win protections for Dreamers; fight cuts for Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, and food stamps; and take back the House and Senate.

We are awed at what we accomplished together so far.  There is much work to do in the year ahead, and we stand ready to rise to the challenge.  Together we will move our country forward.  To a future that is better and bright.

ACTION: PROTECT MUELLER AND RUSSIA INVESTIGATION

    From Indivisible Oregon...

     PROTECT MUELLER AND RUSSIA INVESTIGATION
    ———————————————————————————
    #ProtectMueller
    #TrumpRussia
    #Resist

While the GOP-led Congress failed to secure permanent CHIP funding and a clean DREAM act in 2017, another crisis is looming—Trump’s possible firing of Robert Mueller to shut down investigation of Russia’s 2016 electoral interference.

Pundits maintain that increasing noise by Trump’s supporters inside/outside Congress is merely aimed at weakening/undermining Mueller to provide cover for later pardons.

Even if Mueller’s removal is not imminent, as Senator Mark Warner argued on the Senate floor, Congress must stop a constitutional crisis before it starts—stressing that removing Mueller or pardoning those charged would be a “gross abuse of power” that’s unacceptable and un-American.

In August, responding to anti-Mueller rumblings, the “Special Counsel Independence Protection Act (S.1735/H.R.3654)" was introduced in both chambers. It would permit special counsel’s removal only upon finding of good cause by 3-judge panel.

We cannot allow this legislation to languish. We must urge its immediate passage before it’s too late.

We must also prepare to stand up for our country should Trump fire Mueller.  Join Indivisible Oregon and pledge to attend a "Nobody is Above the Law" rally.  Our response to Trump’s power-grab will determine whether Congress actually exercises its constitutional power/duty to rein Trump in.

SAMPLE SCRIPT: for everyone but Walden
“My name is [--] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am very concerned about Trump’s attempts to undermine Mueller’s investigation and that he will create a constitutional crisis by firing Mueller during the holidays. I ask that the Senator/Rep to call for immediate passage of the Special Counsel Independence Protection Act (S.1735/H.R.3654). It is Congress’ duty to ensure that we continue to be governed by the rule of law. I would also like to thank the Senator/Rep for voting no on the continuing resolution and standing by CHIP and the Dreamers. Thank you.”

    SAMPLE SCRIPT for Walden:
“My name is [--] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am very concerned about Trump’s attempts to undermine Mueller’s investigation and that he will create a constitutional crisis by firing Mueller during the holidays. It is Congress’ duty to ensure that we continue to be governed by the rule of law. I would to express my disappointment in the Representative’s vote on the tax bill and the continuing resolution.  Time and time again he has not stood with his constituents and we will remember this come November. Please do your duty when it comes to our national security and protect the Mueller investigation”

ACTION: TIME TO TURN UP THE HEAT

    From Indivisible Oregon...

    **CALL TO ACTION**
    Thursday, December 21, 2017
    ———————————————————————————
TIME TO TURN UP THE HEAT TO PROTECT THE VULNERABLE
    ———————————————————————————
    #DreamActNow
    #FundCHIPNow
    #DisasterRelief
    #NoPayGoWaiver

While selling its tax bill as a middle-class tax cut, Republicans cynically passed legislation that primarily benefits the wealthy and corporations and adds $1.5 trillion to the deficit. We warned the GOP their tax scam would trigger automatic cuts, under the PayGo Law, to Medicare and zero out federal block grants that will bust state budgets.

GOP leaders airily dismissed those concerns, expecting Democrats to supply the necessary votes to waive the cuts. Not so fast.

Republicans lead Congress. If they don’t want PayGo cuts, they shouldn’t have written a tax bill that creates such a huge deficit. Democrats should not bail them out of their PayGo mess. Instead, Dems should turn up the heat to protect the vulnerable among us.

The federal government will shut down Friday unless a new spending bill is passed.  Democrats must use their leverage to demand:

    • clean Dream Act, to prevent possible daily deportation of Dreamers
    • restoration of CHIP coverage for 9 million children
    • $180 billion for disaster relief/rebuilding in Northwest/Texas/Florida/Puerto Rico (where Americans lack power/clean water/healthcare)

Republicans have forgotten these kids/disaster victims while creating a PayGO disaster. Our MoCs must advocate for the vulnerable without bailing out the GOP.

    ————————————————————————————
**ACTION 1: CALL YOUR REP AND OUR SENATORS **
(Leave a message if you can’t get through.)

SAMPLE SCRIPT for everyone but Wyden and Walden:
“My name is [--] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I want to thank the Senator/Rep for voting “no” on the last continuing budget resolution. Soon s/he will be voting on both a waiver of the automatic PayGo cuts triggered by the tax bill and another continuing budget resolution. Please promise me that s/he will vote “no” on the PayGo waiver and only vote “yes” on the next continuing resolution if it has a Clean DREAM Act, permanent CHIP funding and adequate disaster relief. It is time to turn up the heat to protect the vulnerable among us. Thank you.”

    SAMPLE SCRIPT for Wyden:
“My name is [--] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. “My name is [--] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I was surprised Senator Wyden voted “yes” on the last continuing budget resolution when it didn’t include a Clean DREAM Act or permanent CHIP funding. Soon s/he will be voting on a bill to waive the automatic PayGo cuts triggered by the tax bill and on another continuing budget resolution. I am asking that the Senator to promise me that he will vote “no” on the PayGo waiver and only vote "yes” on the next continuing resolution if contains a Clean DREAM Act, permanent CHIP funding and adequate disaster relief. It is time to turn up the heat to protect the vulnerable among us. Thank you.”

    SAMPLE SCRIPT for Walden:
“My name is [--] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. Soon the Rep will be voting on a bill to waive the automatic PayGo cuts triggered by the tax bill and a continuing budget resolution. I am asking him to please think about his constituents and not his donors when he takes these votes. Vote “no” on the PayGo waiver and only vote “yes” on the next continuing resolution if contains a Clean DREAM Act, permanent CHIP funding and adequate disaster relief.  It is our moral responsibility to provide for all Americans. Thank you.”

ACTION: A CONTINUING BUDGET RESOLUTION THAT WORKS FOR AMERICANS

    From Indivisible Oregon..

    **CALL TO ACTION**
    Wednesday, December 20, 2017
    ———————————————————————————
A CONTINUING BUDGET RESOLUTION THAT WORKS FOR AMERICANS
    ———————————————————————————
    #DreamActNow
    #FundCHIPNow
    #DisasterRelief

Rather than dealing with unmet needs of vast majority of Americans, GOP has been obsessed with ramming through, without Democratic input, the Trump Tax Scam—a holiday gift to its wealthy and corporate backers.

To keep the government open, however, requires Democratic votes—providing chance to show America how different their priorities are. To flip Congress in 2018, Democrats must seize this opportunity and demand:

    • Clean Dream Act, to prevent possible daily deportation of 1000+ Dreamers
    • Restoration of CHIP coverage for 9 million children
    • $180 billion for disaster relief/rebuilding in Northwest/Texas/Florida/Puerto Rico (where Americans still lack power/clean water/healthcare)
    • No PAYGO waiver, holding GOP responsible for draconian domestic program cuts caused by Tax Scam

Due to Republican mismanagement, Congress has only 3 days to avert a government shutdown. House GOP pushing for another extension into January without tackling these significant needs.

We cannot let that happen again. Democrats must demand continuing resolution that takes care of all Americans – many of whom cannot afford to wait any longer.

Fighting for these priorities may risk a government shutdown. But, failure is not an option. Democrats must fight to ensure government working for all—not just the top 1%.

**ACTION 1: CALL YOUR SENATORS AND REPRESENTATIVE**
(Leave a message if you can’t get through.)

SAMPLE SCRIPT for everyone but Wyden and Walden:
“My name is [--] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I want to thank the Senator/Rep for voting “no” on the last continuing budget resolution. We must keep fighting to ensure that the government works for all, not just the top 1%. Today I am asking that he/she promises me to only vote “yes” on the next continuing resolution if it contains, at a minimum, a Clean DREAM Act, permanent CHIP funding, adequate disaster relief, and no PAYGO waiver. Thank you.”

    SAMPLE SCRIPT for Wyden:
“My name is [--] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code].  I was surprised Senator Wyden voted “yes” on the last continuing budget resolution when it didn’t include a Clean DREAM Act or CHIP funding.  We must put an end to the succession of continuing resolutions and keep fighting to ensure that the government works for all, not just the top 1%. Today I am asking him to promise me to only vote “yes” on the next continuing resolution if it contains, at a minimum, a Clean DREAM Act, permanent CHIP funding, adequate disaster relief, and no PAYGO waiver. Thank you.”

    SAMPLE SCRIPT for Walden:
“My name is [--] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. This week the Rep will be voting on a continuing resolution.  I am asking him to please think about his constituents and not his donors when he takes this vote. He has a responsibility to ensure that the government works for all Americans, and not just the top 1%. Only vote “yes” on the next continuing resolution if it contains a Clean DREAM Act, permanent CHIP funding, adequate disaster relief, and no PAYGO waiver. Thank you.”
